It is a well-known fact that a balanced diet coupled with regular exercise is the key to weight loss, but is there more that you can do to aid your efforts?

After a long session at the gym, many of us like to take a while to relax in the sauna to recover from a tough workout. Saunas are renowned for their health benefits. But is using a sauna good for weight loss?

Water Weight

Sweating means that our bodies lose some of the salt and water they have retained. Using a sauna after exercise can rid your body of any excess water weight you may be carrying. This method only works to remove water – not body fat – but can temporarily give you a slimmer and less bloated appearance. It is important to remember to remain adequately hydrated during and after exercise.

Calorie Burning

Our bodies are constantly burning calories; even during non-active everyday activities. By merely sitting in a sauna your body is being challenged by an increase in your heart rate and sweat production. This will also temporarily raise your metabolic rate and causes your body to burn calories. Although the amount of calories lost may not seem like a significant amount, it is a good way to help your body wind down after exercise while still keeping your weight loss goal in mind.

Muscle Pain

Saunas can also help reduce exercise related muscle pain in the hours after your workout. This means your body may need less recovery time and will allow you to continue with your exercise regime without having to worry about aching and stiff muscles the next day. Keeping motivated and feeling good are a large part of successful weight loss.

As with all aids to weight loss, using a sauna will only be effective when used in conjunction with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
